Mental Health - Outpatient

Walden House offers integrated treatment for clients with substance abuse and other mental health issues.   Clients entering Walden House outpatient programs undergo screenings and assessments to determine their need for mental health services.   Depending upon individual treatment plans, clients may take part in individual therapy, group therapy, day treatment, medication services, case management, skills training and crisis services.   Walden House therapists provide interventions and support to assist clients to maintain housing, better cope with life stressors, fulfill their role obligations and achieve their treatment goals.

Many clients come into Walden House with a history of "self-medicating" mental health symptoms including depression, anxiety, and reactions to trauma.   Walden House mental health services are arrayed to enhance positive coping through the acquisition of specific skills.   Groups made available to clients include Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills training in mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.   Additionally, Seeking Safety is a skills curriculum made available to clients with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or those clients who may not meet the full clinical picture for PTSD, but still re-experience trauma in thoughts, flashbacks, and dreams.

Intensive Outpatient Services: Harm Reduction Day Treatment Program

Recognizing that one size doesn't fit all in substance abuse treatment, Walden House has designed outpatient programs for clients who may be ambivalent about giving up drug use, but still want to improve their ability to cope with stressors and better manage their mental health symptoms.   The Walden House Dual Diagnosis Day Treatment Program offers services on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the first floor of 1899 Mission Street in San Francisco.   The program is designed to offer "low threshold" mental health and substance abuse treatment to clients who still may be using substances, but require mental health services and substance abuse treatment based on harm reduction principles.

The program creates a supportive community and offers breakfast, lunch, and nine structured treatment groups each week.   Clients take part in DBT skills training, relapse prevention, recovery skills, wellness, and symptom management groups. They also have an opportunity to engage in expressive arts and socialization activities.   The length of the treatment episode varies according to the treatment plan and the program is open to residents who have MediCal eligibility in San Francisco.   For more information, contact:
