Walden House offers part-time practicum placements to over 20 psychology and social work graduate students each year. Working with the training directors of many Bay area masters and doctoral level academic programs, the agency offers students rich training experiences in diverse, dynamic environments working with both adults and adolescents
Practicum placements at Walden House usually involve a commitment of at least 16 hours per week and take part over the course of the academic year (September through June). Practicum students at Walden House have the opportunity to gain clinical skills and experience in a community-based behavioral health setting practicing integrated treatment for substance abuse and mental health problems. Additionally, they gain experience working in the therapeutic community model and receive training in many evidence-based “best practices” such as Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Seeking Safety.
Walden House's Mental Health Training Director is a California licensed psychologist who assumes a primary supervisory role with the students. In addition to weekly individual supervision, students take part in weekly group supervision, a specialized didactic track, and auxiliary supervision from mental health managers in the specific programs where they are assigned.
Applications are accepted from January 15th through March 15th each year. For more information about mental health training opportunities at Walden House , please contact:
