Job Description:

Primary role is to support the development of the Therapeutic Community.  The Unit Manager is responsible for the coordination of the substance abuse treatment at the housing unit level and oversees daily on-site operations of Unit.  H/She is responsible for supervision of scheduling and treatment activities of approximately 246 residents housed in 4 distinct housing areas (clusters).  H/She is responsible for the scheduling of all inmates into IPTCSAP activities, directing the contracted Program Counselors in the implementation of the plan for provision of services.  The Unit Manager’ duties include acting as the liaison with departmental custody and classification staff, participating in inmate classification hearings, supervising the administration of the assessment process of all newly arrived inmates, supervising the Program Counselor's activities and monitoring substance abuse program services plan development.  The Supervising Counselor shall meet with the Program Counselors to develop the Substance Abuse Services Coordination Plan for continued community-based substance abuse services upon release.  This position is responsible for the secure storage of participant records and participant case files.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities:  Responsible through delegation and/or direct oversight for all TC process.  Oversees the development of program clinical schedule and supervises the assessment process of all newly arrived clients ensuring that clients receive all program services identified as necessary in their individual treatment plans.  Directly supervises 4 building coordinators who in turn supervise activities of 12 counselors in the implementation of program services.  Oversees the ongoing development of the Mentor Program.  Maintains compliance with all administrative requirements.  Provides direction and individual supervision .to all reports.  Oversees the hiring process of counseling applicants.  Attend the Tuesday morning touchbase with all SAP staff and daily touchbase with Director and all management staff.
Development and Planning Responsibilities:  Lead member of the program’s management team.  As such, takes an active role in all program planning and development activities.  Acts as a liaison with departmental custody, counseling, and classification staff. 
Administrative Responsibilities: Ensures the accurate maintenance of program charts.  Conducts weekly staff meetings.  Facilitates Unit Quality Assurance Team.  Assures unit training needs and coordinates necessary training for staff.  In accordance with guidelines established by Walden House to satisfy internal and external administrative demands and those of evaluating agencies, ensures that accurate and current paperwork and records are maintained on all clients and staff as required.  Ensures follow through on all items in all logs on a daily basis.
Department of Corrections Responsibilities: Works in collaboration with CDCR/SATF by attending joint meetings requisite training and upholding all the norms, policies, and procedures of CDCR/SATF.

PREREQUISITES
• The equivalent of three (3) cumulative years of full time experience supervising counseling staff in substance abuse programs for the criminal justice population; or
• The equivalent of five (5) cumulative years of full time experience as a journey-level counselor in substance abuse programs for the criminal justice population.
• Within one (1) year of hire into the IPTCSAP, the Unit Manager shall be certified, in substance abuse program services within a criminal justice setting.  The accrediting educational institution shall use criteria consistent with standards for addiction counselor staff competencies developed by UCSD.
• Supervisory experience in a residential substance abuse or mental health treatment program
• Excellent time management skills
• Good writing and communication skills
• A clear understanding of professional ethics, integrity, and judgment and the ability to maintain such among her/his own staff
• Demonstrated knowledge of men’s treatment needs
• Ability to serve as a role model for clients and staff
• If in recovery from AOD abuse, must be 3 years drug-free

COMPENSATION:  $33,000 - $42,000 plus Walden House offers a full range of benefits, including medical, dental and vision, as well as 401(A) & 403(B) for all Full time employees.
