Residential Counselor I

Job Description:

Responsible for assisting residents during daily program activities. Help residents meet treatment goals. Establish therapeutic alliance with residents. Learn and embrace Walden House philosophies, guiding principles, and standards of care for adolescents. Attend and participate in all required trainings, staff meetings, and clinical committees. Apply learned curriculum, interventions and strategies specific to this population. Role model positive and professional behavior at all times. Maintain positive clinical environment at all times.

Community Responsibilities: During school, assists teachers managing behavior problems and does some tutoring.  Participates in recreational activities with clients.  Leads house meetings and specialized groups.  On a rotating basis, checks security of building and accounts for all clients. Performs urinalyses, body searches, clothing screenings, and room searches.  Escorts clients to appointments and outings. Counsels the client and assists them in meeting treatment goals by utilizing clinical tools and treatment plan objectives. Uses the program’s clinical tools in a positive way and not as punishment for the kids. Understands the program tools and demonstrates the ability to apply them in a therapeutic and empowering way for this population.
Administration and Compliance: Keeps records in accordance with Walden House guidelines (log notes, AWOL reports; incident reports, etc.)
Role Model: Models healthy, ethical behavior at all times.

PREREQUISITES:
• Able to avoid power struggles with residents, and refrains from provoking residents.
• Must be a certified Alcohol/Drug Counselor. If not, must register with an AOD certification program in a local community college at the earliest opportunity. After registration, must obtain certification within 5 years.
• Good writing skills with proper grammar and good spelling.
• A clear understanding of and ability to demonstrate professional ethics, boundaries, and judgment.
• Strong verbal and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage a diverse population, including sexual orientation, race, and religion variances.

COMPENSATION:  $14.42 per hour plus Walden House offers a full range of benefits, including medical, dental and vision, as well as 401(A) & 403(B) for all Full time employees.
