Board of Directors

The Walden House Board of Directors is comprised of community leaders and concerned citizens who serve as an operating board overseeing both the day to day operation and growth of the organization.

The Honorable Harlan Grossman, Chair, is a Superior Court judge in Contra Costa County and played a significant role in the development of drug courts.

Jan van der Voort, Vice Chair, Secretary is a business executive who has led Human Resources as Executive Vice President at VISA-USA, and  is currently CAO for Lucas Films.

Steven Bach, MBA has held positions in Finance at Frito-Lay and American Airlines, and as CFO at Citadon, iReady, SuccessFactors, and, currently, Nimblefish Technologies.  

Dianne Fong-Torres was a senior adult probation officer for the City and County of San Francisco for 30 years, with a specialty in substance abuse. On retirement seven years ago, she joined the Department of Parking and Traffic as a hearing officer,on a part-time basis.

Eric Gonzales, MBA is currently CEO of Ujogo, an Internet startup.  Eric has spent the majority of his career as a venture capitalist at Doll Capital Management and in high tech product management at Cisco Systems. 

John Keith Irwin, Ph.D. is a Professor Emeritus at San Francisco State University, author of seven books on prison sociology, and a renowned researcher and consultant in the fields of Criminal Justice Sociology, addiction, and at-risk youth.

Susan Johnston, RN has been a registered nurse for over 25 years. Her experience includes over 18 years in clinical nursing practice, private consulting, and work in the corporate sector, including having worked on the Joint Commission of Hospital Accreditation process during her tenure in clinical nursing.

Ethel Siegel Newlin is a long-time community activist, and is currently Director of Neighborhood Services & Community Outreach for the San Francisco District Attorney.

Deborah J. Broyles is a Partner specializing in labor and employment law with the law firm of Thelen Reid Brown Raysman and Steiner LLP. She received a J.D. from Harvard Law School and was admitted to the California Bar in 1993. She has received many honors in her profession and is committed to enhancing diversity in the legal profession.

Susan Belinda Christian is an Assistant District Attorney in San Francisco specializing in criminal law and appellate practice. She received her B.A. and J.D. from Yale, and has been a member of the California Bar since 1992. Susan currently serves as co-chair of the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club and has a deep interest in penal system policy and reform.
